Lord Lucan and the smartest club in London
In 1970s London, there was no smarter place to be seen than in the luxuriously opulent surroundings of the Clermont Club at 44 Berkeley Square. Even though it was only a club, the Clermont had the very grandest staircase of any house in London. As you entered the vast entrance hall, you would be greeted by a doorman and two beautiful women in silk gowns; the walls, in green and gold, dripped with Old Masters; the antique furniture was in the very height of good taste; and in the drawing room, quietly playing high stakes games of backgammon, were not just rich men but gentlemen the likes of Ian Fleming, the Earl of Derby and Lord Lucan.
