Home Lights and Furniture Design

Tremendous decrease in square footage of homes has challenged decorator’s knowledge of space use. In 1928, a $10,000 home had 2,000 square feet; in 1948, only 700 square feet. Decorators have learned to design and use dual purpose furnishings and to create furniture that serves living needs and, at same time, meets aesthetic needs which may not be possible without giving careful attention to home lights. Furniture need not be plain in design, but it can be simple which is supported by interior lighting. There is a degree to which scale cannot be reduced without sacrificing comfort and usefulness. A bed needs to be 6′ 3" to 6′ 6" in length. For this reason room arrangement has had to be re-analyzed. Corner can no longer be ignored. It has become the center of interest in many rooms, replacing fireplace and adding lights.
